The re-release of Hanoi Rocks’ albums on CD was in large part due to efforts by Guns N’ Roses via their own record label UZI Suicide. They have been cited as an influence by major bands such as Guns N’ Roses and Manic Street Preachers. Later that year Casino was fired and replaced by Razzle (Nicholas Dingley).Īlthough the band never gained significant commercial success, they have a considerable cult following and critical acclaim for their ‘sleazy’ yet melodic style of music. In 1981 they moved to Stockholm and in 1982 to London to take advantage of the livelier music scene in these cities. The following year Piesnack, Sirola and Nedo were replaced by guitar player Andy McCoy (Antti Hulkko), bass player Sam Yaffa (Sami Takamäki) and drummer Gyp Casino (Jesper Sporre). Hanoi Rocks was formed in Helsinki in 1979 and the first line-up included vocalist and saxophone player Michael Monroe (Matti Fagerholm), guitar player Nasty Suicide (Jan Stenfors), guitar player Stefan Piesnack, bass player Nedo and drummer Peki Sirola. Although their album sales are strong, they are more widely known for their energetic live performances. According to Finnish radio and TV personality Jone Nikula (who was also Hanoi Rocks’ tour manager in the 2000s), Hanoi Rocks’ albums have sold between 780,000 and 1,000,000 copies around the world, but mostly in Scandinavia and Japan. They were also one of the first rock bands to tour in Asia, and were the first western rock band to play in Delhi. In the 80s, Hanoi Rocks were the most successful Finnish band internationally and are still popular in the United States, Japan, and the UK. Original members vocalist Michael Monroe and guitarist Andy McCoy reunited in 2001 and were active with the new line-up of Hanoi Rocks until 2009. The band broke up in 1985 after their drummer Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley died in a car accident a year earlier. He was living in Los Angeles in early 90s and used to hang around with GnR guys along with other Hanoi members.Hanoi Rocks was a Finnish glam rock band formed in 1979, whose most successful period came in the early 1980s. He also joined Hanoi Rocks as bass player in the '85 but never performed or recorded with the band. Right Next Door to Hell was co-written by Timo Caltion who was a roadie and guitar technician for Hanoi Rocks in the beginning of 80s. She can also be seen in the Sweet Child of Mine music video. Hanoi Rocks guitarist Andy McCoy is married to Angela Nicoletti who was Izzy's girlfriend sometime in the 80's. One of the most obvious is Axl Rose appearing in the music video of Hanoi Rocks singer Michael Monroe's Dead Jail or Rock'n'Roll. Some random connections between bands/people: Also the first album Bankok shocks, Saigon shakes, Hanoi Rocks is quite strong and one of my favourites. In my opinion the strongest Hanoi album is the third one (Self Destruction Blues) which ironically contains some random singles and B-sides. If I remember correctly it was Izzy who initially was a fan of Hanoi Rocks and made the other GnR guys listen their records. There isn't much in common musically between GnR and Hanoi Rocks. However, they were apparently quite influential in the glam scene and shaping the fashion sensibilities of LA during the early '80s.Ĭan you think of other similarities between GnR and Hanoi Rocks? I've tried listening to many songs of Hanoi Rocks, and there aren't any other songs besides "Lost In The City (live 1984)" that I love. Plus Axl looks like Mike Monroe here as well.įinally, Hanoi Rocks has a song where the lyrics state "Welcome to the Jungle.") Izzy Stradlin looks just like the two at the top and right of this image. Here's a picture of Michael Monroe and Axl looks just like him in later years. Notice the hat at the far left? It's identical to what Slash wears now. Here's a picture of Hanoi Rocks around 1985. Hanoi Rocks has a very nice song called "Lost In The City," and one of the lyrics is "Take me down." I read about this association on Wiki, also.
